How to get Mesa skunks out from under a shed or porch?
Skunks are omnivorous animals that live off human waste. These creatures often take residence under a shed or porch. Although harmless, you should get rid of them without approaching them or you will risk being bitten or even get a dose of their harmful spray that can cause a lot of discomfort to animals and human eyes.
Fortunately, there are some things you can do to get rid of Mesa skunks in your yard which include:
Do not feed Arizona skunks:
Skunks are scavengers and eat nothing nutritious they find in their path. If you have trees that produce berries, wild apples, nuts or other fruits, clean them regularly by raking the yard as often as you can.
You should also rule out other types of vegetation, such as piles of grass as they may contain seeds and other food sources for skunks. Place a tray under bird feeders to collect the fall of food and clean the stray seeds in your yard.
Protect your waste:
Skunks survive with trash. Therefore, it is important to keep the trash can sealed properly. You can get a lockable garbage bin at local home improvement stores in your area. You can also keep a garbage can in your garage or under your shed or porch during night time so its smell doesn’t attract Mesa skunks.
Bright Lights; Scared skunks:
Skunks are nocturnal creatures and they do not like bright light. Lighting your yard at night will scare Arizona skunks away, but you risk attracting insects that love light such as moths and crickets.
Use chemical products that repel skunks:
There is some chemical available on the market which helps to keep Mesa skunks away. You just need to spray on the area where skunks are suspected.
• Dog and fox urine
• The pepper spray also repels skunks and other wild animals such as squirrels.
• Citrus shells naturally repel Arizona skunks.
• Ammonia. Soak cotton balls in ammonia and place them in your yard to keep skunks away.
Caution: Since these chemicals can be harmful to your pets and children, it is important to know various safety measures before using it.
Close off places:
The Mesa skunks reside mostly in protected areas such as under the porches and terraces. Close these spaces using a fence, rocks or plywood.
Piles of building materials, wood can also serve as a refuge for skunks. You must store these materials in a container or a ship to prevent the skunks from residing there. Also, clear low vegetation or large bushes as they act like skunks hiding places.
If the skunks are persistent to leave your yard, contact an animal control center in your area to help take care of the removal. They have special tools to catch and release skunks away from their yard.
